The Gate Keepers Booth, circa 1890, is located at the historic Red Bank New Jersey Train Station. Once common in the early years of rail travel, it is believed to be one of the only remaining booths in the State. Buildings such as this provided shelter, warmth, and minimal comforts for the Gate Keeper. After the advent of electrified rail crossings such buildings slowly became obsolete.
The booth was first restored in 2002 by Preservation Red Bank through membership donations and a grant from the Monmouth County Historical Commission. An agreement with New Jersey Transit allowed the structure to be returned back to its historical locale.
In 2018 the Town of Red Bank, with help from the Historical Preservation Commission and New Jersey Transit, gave approval for a second restoration project. The project repaired years of damage from weather and lack of use. Proper historic signage was installed and historically accurate color schemes were matched to the existing Train Station.
The Bitter Mug Coffee Co. would like to thank all those who made it possible for The Gate Keepers Booth restoration. We hope to see you soon for coffee, or simply to pass by and enjoy our architectural history.
Sincerely,
Michael Wall
